Interior Ministry: Gunshot Wounds Of 2 Killed During Clashes On Kyiv's Hrushevskoho Not Fired From Service Weapons (19:37, Thursday, January 23, 2014)
Ukrainian News Agency
The Ministry of Interior Affairs has said that the gunshot wounds that resulted in the deaths of two anti-government protesters on January 22 during clashes on Hrushevskoho Street in Kyiv were not fired from standard-issue firearms.
The ministry's spokesman Serhii Burlakov announced this on the 112 Ukraine television channel.
"The causes of death of the first and the second are already known. An autopsy has been performed, and it was really a gunshot wound, but ... it was not from a service weapon ... since allegations were made yesterday that police officers used bullets for the [Makarov pistol] and that sniper rifles also figured there, etc. The police are serving there without service firearms," he stressed.
Burlakov said that the Ministry of Interior Affairs would receive information on Thursday about the specific types of bullets used.
"We will have an answer today regarding the specific type of projectiles used to inflict the bodily harm, but it is important for us to understand that the police were not called to the place where it happened, meaning that the body was transferred and transferred several times. The person was initially alive, but he later died," he said.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the European Parliament's President Martin Schulz has expressed shock at the reports of dead protesters in Kyiv.
