What a Crate in Syria Says About Saudi Help to the Rebels

Earlier this week, the BBC published a report documenting the apparent hand of Saudi Arabia in the transfer of Ukrainian arms to Syria’s rebels. The report was accompanied by a photograph of a wooden munitions crate bearing a label showing that the crate had been packed at a factory listed as LCW, in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, and then shipped to Saudi Arabia.
The BBC report said the crate was one of three containers its journalists found in Aleppo that bore labels from the same manufacturer.
So what did the crates contain, and what were they doing in Aleppo? The BBC said that rebels had not allowed its journalists to look inside the boxes. But it noted that the crates had been shipped by a company, Dastan, specializing in “naval weapons and missile complexes.”
That bit of suggestion might lead some readers to deduce that such weapons were involved in this case. But this does not appear to be so.
Two independent arms researchers, Damien Spleeters (@damspleet) and Nic R. Jenzen-Jones (@RogueAdventurer), have since pooled work to establish the much more likely context – and contents – of the wooden crate. Rather than look at the shipper, they did the right thing and looked at the manufacturer, whose English-language trade symbol, LCW, is written on the label in the BBC’s photograph.
As Mr. Jenzen-Jones noted in a post on his blog, Rogue Adventurer, LCW is short for Lugansk Cartridge Works, one of the names for a former Soviet plant that continues to produce small-arms cartridges for the standard suite of former Eastern bloc arms. He concluded that the box held cartridges, not missiles or naval weapons. His assessment was well-rooted in fact, considering that the factory does not manufacture missiles or naval weapons. It makes cartridges and medals. The product line is visible here.
Mr. Jenzen-Jones’s analysis was further supported by a photograph made last month in Syria by Mr. Spleeters. It showed the headstamp on an expended 7.62×39-millimeter cartridge, the sort fired by the Kalashnikov assault rifle, bearing the LCW marking, along with the year stamp 10. Those two digits indicated that the cartridge had been manufactured in 2010 – the same year as the contract number listed on the shipping label in the BBC report. What this suggests is that cartridges that match the shipping label appear to be circulating in Syria.
At War would like to second Mr. Jenzen-Jones’s analysis, and add two bits of detail. First, the photograph above shows an unexpended 7.62×39-millimeter cartridge that At War found late last month in the headquarters of the Voices of the Right Brigade, near Deir Sonbul. (For more about this group, watch this video.) This round bears the same stamp as that found by Mr. Spleeters, and also matches the data available on the shipping label photographed by the BBC.
Next, note the photograph below, also made at the Voices of the Right Brigade. It shows an ammunition can, colloquially called a sardine can, in which 7.62×39-millimeter cartridges are sealed at the factory. In this case, as the stenciling indicates, the factory was LCW – the Lugansk Cartridge Works. The packing date marks the vintage: 2010.
The shipping label seen by the BBC, the ammunition sampling done by Mr. Spleeters and At War, and Mr. Jenzen-Jones’s analysis together suggest that Kalashnikov ammunition procured from Ukraine by Saudi Arabia is reaching Syrian rebel hands. This would align with what the rebels themselves say, and with Robert F. Worth’s report in The New York Times on Sunday, in which Saudi and Qatari officials confirmed providing light arms and ammunition to the fighters seeking the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.
Surprising? Not really. But a useful data point and corroboration of things we thought we knew. Next, what would be especially interesting to know would be the route and means of transfer from Saudi possession to the rebels, and how the ammunition is distributed once it crosses into Syria.
No matter such details, which may emerge with time, this finding should be considered in the context of Mr. Worth’s article. The rebels remain woefully underequipped to fight the Syrian Army and Air Force. Most of their weapons appear to be either captured from defeated government soldiers and positions they have overrrun, or bought from smugglers and the black market.
For an example, look no further than the crate that was beside the sardine can from Lugansk. It had held rocket-propelled grenades shipped about 15 years ago from Russia to the Syrian Defense Ministry, as the labels below shows.

Die Aufständischen könnten daran ein Interesse haben, um die Türkei zum Eingreifen zu bringen. Wenn es syrische Regierungstruppen waren, kann es nur ein Irrtum gewesen sein. Denn Syrien kann kein Interesse an einer militärischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Türkei haben. Die Türkei ist ihr militärisch haushoch überlegen.“
Es wird Zeit, den großmäuligen und größenwahnsinnigen das Maul zu stopfen.

...Die türkische Luftwaffe setzte nach Angaben eines Offiziellen ein Kampfflugzeug ein, um einen syrischen Hubschrauber abzudrängen. Nach Informationen der Zeitung "Hürriyet" verlegte die türkische Armee inzwischen mindestens 250 Panzer an die Grenze zu Syrien.
Der syrische Hubschrauber habe sich der Grenze genähert, um die von Rebellen kontrollierte syrische Stadt Asmarin zu bombardieren, sagte der türkische Offizielle, der namentlich nicht genannt werden wollte, AFP in Ankara. Daraufhin sei das türkische Kampfflugzeug vom Stützpunkt im südöstlichen Diyarbakir gestartet und habe den Hubschrauber abgedrängt....
In der vergangenen Woche war der Konflikt an der Grenze eskaliert, nachdem syrische Artilleriegeschosse in dem türkischen Ort Akcakale einschlugen und fünf Zivilisten töteten. Das Parlament in Ankara hatte daraufhin grundsätzlich grünes Licht für einen Militäreinsatz im Nachbarland gegeben.
Laut "Hürriyet", die sich auf Militärkreise beruft, laufen die Planungen für eine mögliche Intervention auf Hochtouren. Demnach sind die Planer zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass sich die relativ flache Gegend um Akcakale gut für einen Panzerangriff eignen würde. Dem Bericht zufolge sehen die Überlegungen vor, einen Panzereinsatz durch Luftangriffe auf syrische Stellungen vorzubereiten....
Die USA stärkten ihrem NATO-Partner dabei den Rücken. "Wir unterstützen die Entscheidung der türkischen Regierung, das Flugzeug zu untersuchen", sagte US-Außenamtssprecherin Victoria Nuland in Washington.

Das sieht garnicht gut aus. Womöglich wollen die bekloppten Türken auch ohne die NATO in Syrien einfallen, einen offiziellen Krieg mit Syrien beginnen.
Und die verlogenen USA unterstützen sie doch anstatt zu bremsen.
Die Türken haben bereits vor Monaten angekündigt, dass sie eine Pufferzone einrichten würden, sobald mehr als 100.000 Flüchtlingen in die Türkei kämen. Dass immer mehr Flüchtlinge fliehen, hat damit zu tun, dass sich die Sicherheitslage verschärft, woran die Türkei mit ihrer Unterstützung für den Terrorismus mitschuldig ist. Jetzt sucht die Türkei nach Vorwänden, um in Syrien einzumarschieren.
